For most people, if you own a digital camera, odds are that you are holding in your hand a point-and-shoot camera, also known as a compact camera. Compact cameras are exactly what they sound like, compact. These are the cameras that you can take with you, no matter where you are going. They are resilient and practical for many different situations. And while they may be compact, they are still able to shoot some striking images and many feature some excellent features as far as your photography needs may be.
You may be eyeing a DSLR camera, but are unsure of whether or not you should just go with a compact camera. If this is the case, there are a few things to keep in mind. DSLR cameras are much larger than compact cameras. There is a reason point-and-shoot cameras are called compact cameras. They can fit in your pocket, while DSLR cameras don’t even come close to fitting in your pocket. In order to lug around a DSLR camera, you’ll need to either wear the camera around your neck or bring a camera bag along with you. In some situations that may be doable, but if you just want to take some pictures during a night out on the town, a compact camera is the way to go. The camera is also extremely easy to use. As the name says, you just point the thing and shoot. No need to mess around with the setting to produce a beautiful photo as the camera’s automatic settings will make sure all of your subjects come out looking fantastic. If you would like to mess with the settings, though, many new compact cameras will let you do that as well.
Also, a lot of times, you may not be able to bring a DSLR camera in to an event. Say for instance, you are attending an outdoor music festival and want to take some photos of your favorite bands. If that’s the case, odds are that you will only be allowed to do so with a point-and-shoot camera. The only people who are allowed to shoot some concerts with DSLR cameras are professional photographers, the ones who are taking photos for media outlets. You may see on your ticket that professional cameras are not allowed, that’s referring to DSLR cameras.
A compact camera is the most practical camera available. With advances in technology, there are very few things that a DSLR camera can really do that much better than a point-and-shoot. If you have the money and want to shell out for a more expensive, bigger and professional camera, by all means, choose a DSLR. There are very few reasons why a compact camera is not going to meet all of your needs and expectations when it comes to your photography needs. Whether you are shooting a portrait that will be featured in front of a mat board, a family photo at Christmas, a friend’s birthday at a restaurant or even a beautiful sunset, a compact camera can meet your needs.
